As Circe has admitted her fondness for French Vanilla cappuccinos and taken steps to cut back, I feel I should do the same with my beverage of choice: pop. I drink far, far too much pop. Coke, Dr. Pepper, Ginger Ale, Orange Crush, I love it all. And I never, ever drink diet pop.
As I write this I am finishing up a can of my current favourite: Pepsi Lime. According to the can, I am drinking 150 calories and 41 g of sugars. As my dad is so fond of pointing out, that’s close to 10 teaspoons of sugar. I need to think about that whenever I find myself reaching for a can.
I’ve noticed my pop addiction getting worse recently, to the point that I am starting to crave it when eating certain foods. So it’s time to cut back. I’m going to attempt to drink water or milk with my meals, and limit myself to one can of pop a week for now. Eventually I’d like to get to the point where I’m just drinking it on special occasions. This will be a real challenge for me.
This can be tough! Like you said, sometimes you crave it with certain foods. I do the same with Coke and anything Italian or Mexican. It’s easy for me out here because we just don’t buy it, but it was really hard when I worked and had a pop machine available all day. And now I will have that visual of 10 teaspoons of sugar … !
Also, pop is yummy! and fizzy, it’s the fizz I like most
To make the transition easier try substituting pop for Italian sodas–I don’t think they have quite as much sugar.
President’s Choice makes an absolutely heavenly Blood Orange flavoured soda.
Good luck! You can do it. A friend of mine got off the pop train and she started by just not buying any for ‘storage’. So any time she wanted a pop, she had to go in search of just one. She didn’t keep it at home or at work or in her car. If she wanted one, she went to a vending machine or grabbed one from the store but just one. She said it really helped. If you have think about where and how you’re going to get one every time, it at least slows you down a little bit. Keep us posted! -SG
Thanks for the encouragement and advice everyone! I must admit I had a couple of pops this weekend, but that’s because it was Thanksgiving. 🙂 Otherwise I’m doing pretty well. I won’t be buying it anymore for the house or the office. And next time I crave one I will try an Italian soda instead – that sounds yummy!
